Framed oil on canvas painting, Cordelia in the Court of King Lear (William Shakespeare, The Tragedy of King Lear, Act I - Scene I), signed lower right V.C. Prinsep 1860, after Valentine Cameron Prinsep, RA (British, 1838-1904), wax-resin lined, sight: approx 21.25"h, 26.25"w, overall: 28.5"h, 33.5"w, 12lbs

Condition

CR 9.2.25 - In my opinion regarding LOT: 3143 – please note that I am not an expert on such works, I have taken numerous high-resolution images for your reference, the canvas has been relined and appears stable, the lining is possibly a wax-resin though I cannot confirm, see images, a heavy, older varnish layer is present and fluoresces unevenly under UV light, scattered areas of inpainting are visible across figures, drapery and background, with more notable retouching visible in the darker passages and along the upper background, a stretcher line runs horizontally across the upper register, the surface exhibits an overall fine craquelure with slightly raised and flattened areas consistent with past consolidation, there are slim lines of paint loss along the frame edges and a few small flakes to the surface, the frame is structurally sound with hairlines, small repairs, small scattered losses exposing gesso, and touchups to the finish, overall the painting and frame display wear, restorations and handling commensurate with age and prior conservation
