Framed oil on canvas painting, Portrait of a Gentleman, three-quarter-length seated, wearing a white waistcoat and black jacket, a landscape with palm trees beyond, relined, sight: approx 35.25"h, 27.25"w, overall: approx 40.75"h, 32.75"w, 12.75lbs
10.23.25 - In my opinion regarding LOT: 3237 – please note I am not an expert on such works, the canvas is relined, a UV light examination reveals an aged varnish layer with scattered areas of fluorescence indicating retouching, most notably a stabilized restoration to the upper right quadrant with a small adjacent paint chip visible above (see image), I note a vertical line or fold running through center canvas (near the sitter’s chin), craquelure is present throughout, with possible very light inpainting, minor flakes, and a few small additional restorations visible under UV at the lower left and along the right edge, the surface shows age-related drips and accumulated grime, verso is as pictured, the frame remains tight and intact with some nicks, small losses, and color variation, all consistent with age, display, and prior conservation efforts, overall the portrait retains a strong presence
