American sterling silver two-handled presentation cup, Graff, Washbourne & Dunn, New York, retailed by J.E. Caldwell & Company, Philadelphia, model 625, chased and repousse flowers and foliate scrolls, one side with engraved inscription: "John J. Stevens/ A token of friendship/ from/ Genl. Jos. R. Smith, U.S.A./ 1908," minor denting to back panel,  approx 10.5"h, 14.75"w, 8 1/8"d, 58.24ozt **Note: Joseph Rowe Smith, Jr. (1831-1911) became Surgeon General and Medical Director of the U.S. Army in February 1865 by a general order from President Abraham Lincoln. John J. Stevens (1852-1928), born in San Antonio, Texas, private secretary to Governor of Texas, Edmund J. Davis, clerked for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Galveston, successful businessman and influential member of the Republican party, founder of the San Antonio Brewing Association and vice president of the San Antonio Waterworks** **Provenance: the contents of a luxury San Antonio estate**
