Framed oil on canvas painting, Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan, after Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, Italian, 1483-1520), relined, inpainting, sight: approx 71.5"h, 48.5"w, overall: 85.25"h, 62.25"w **Provenance: deaccessioned from San Marcos Academy (SMA), San Marcos, Texas** Start Price: $800.00 LOT – 1474— the painting is currently hung high, and I am unable to examine the rear canvas, please refer to online images, a UV examination reveals several areas of inpainting along the left, center, and right lower quadrants (as pictured) and possibly at figures cheek/face, the canvas is likely relined, and I observe overall craquelure and evidence of old varnish, there is a consistent line along the left edge from top to bottom this is possibly a repair, or it may be that the canvas was folded before being placed in the current frame, it also could be that the canvas was sewn together due to the size, I am unsure but have taken numerous images for your review, I observe some small paint flakes throughout and some abrasions along the canvas edge, the canvas is not taught in the frame, however, hangs well, the later frame shows some gilt loss, particularly at corners, please refer to the online images for a photo of the rear canvas
