Framed oil on canvas painting, Still life with book and majolica jar, initialed lower right YS, dated [18]86, paper label verso with student's surname given as Smith, relined, sight: approx 21.5"h, 29.25"w, overall: 25.75"h, 33.5"w, 7.5lbs
9.4.25 - In my opinion regarding LOT 2117: I note that the canvas, which has been re-lined for stabilization, remains securely encased within framing, the composition exhibits light seams or impressions related to the reverse stretchers, with a fine network of craquelure throughout, close visual and UV light examinations reveal a few scattered small paint flakes with minute inpainted touch ups such as a central spot on the portrait facing the book cover (see images), which are not uncommon given the age of the work, I observe two small areas of blemishes with likely professional restorations, however I am not an expert on such works, located on the outer edge of the jar in the background and near the lower right corner, both spots being overall minor (see images under UV and natural light), the re-lined canvas is free from observed tearing or holes, and has been finished in a later varnish with a few minute spots of rubs commensurate with inherent contact against the frame, the frame appearing structurally secure with scattered spotting and surface wear such as small nicks and gilding chips commensurate with age and display (see images)
