Framed folk art painting on board, Harvesting Gourds at African House, Melrose Plantation, initialed lower right C.H. (Clementine Rueben Hunter, Louisiana, 1887-1988), retaining label inscribed "Paintings of Plantation Life in Louisiana by Clementine Hunter" with statement about the artist courtesy of African House, Melrose Plantation adhered at verso, accompanied by appraisal issued by Carriage House Market, Natchitoches, appraisal dated 1999, sight: approx 15"h, 15.75"w, overall: approx 21 1/8"h, 21.75"w, 3.25lbs **Provenance: Treasures from the vaults of a Dallas designer** **Note: Clementine Rueben Hunter (Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, 1887-1988) was a renowned self-taught painter recognized for documenting Black Southern life in the Cane River Valley. Hunter moved to Melrose Plantation in 1902 and worked there as a child, before she began selling paintings at a local drugstore for a dollar a piece. She took inspiration from the various artists in residence at African House, a historic structure on Melrose plantation that was converted to an artists' colony after the Civil War. Now a museum-exhibited artist with far-reaching acclaim, Clementine Hunter's prolific career has left a lasting legacy on African-American Folk Art in the South.** Detailed condition reports are not included in this catalog.
