Hunter moved to Melrose Plantation in 1902 and worked there as a child, before she began selling paintings at a local drugstore for a dollar a piece. She took inspiration from the various artists in residence at African House, a historic structure on Melrose plantation that was converted to an artists' colony after the Civil War. Now a museum-exhibited artist with far-reaching acclaim, Clementine Hunter's prolific career has left a lasting legacy on African-American Folk Art in the South.**
