(lot of 2)  Shadowbox framed Confederate Civil War era flag, believed to be period, together with an 1888 Governor of Texas signed document: (1) a Confederate battle flag, hand sewn and originally having thirteen stars and now retaining four complete stars and two partial stars with outlines and apparent pattern markings where the stars once were. the flag now with numerous holes and tears and the remnants of two grommets partially attaching the flag to a wood pole;

(2) a framed document bearing the State Seal of Texas dated November 6, 1888, certified by L.S. Ross, Governor of Texas, as to the appointment of electors for President and Vice President of the United States and signed by Governor Ross on December 17, 1888 together with the John M. Moore, Texas Secretary of State, the document listing 59 electors and their vote count and in the centered body of the document the names of the thirteen persons who were appointed electors based on the highest number of votes, one appointed elector being James S. Woods;

Provenance: A descendant of James Stanton Woods (Texas, Tennessee, 1848-1929) , who at 17 years of age, enlisted in the Confederate Army, in January of 1865, and was mustered out on May,10, 1865, serving as a guard at Camp Ford near Tyler, Texas, the camp was established in 1862 as a prison camp holding captured Union soldiers and once held as many as 5000 prisoners until its’ closing May 19, 1865, at that time releasing more than 1700 captured soldiers, Woods later served in the Texas legislature as a two term state senator and a judge in Kaufman County, Texas, Woods procurement of the flag remains speculative

 Note: Lawrence Sullivan ‘Sul’  Ross (Texas, Louisiana, 1838-1898), the 19th governor of Texas and the ninth youngest general officer of the Confederate Army was promoted to Brigadier General on  December 21, 1863. he commanded the Texas Sixth Cavalry Regiment that participated in more than 135 battles and skirmishes, prior to the Civil War, Ross served as a Texas Ranger and a county sheriff. Ross became a Texas state senator, two term governor and president of what is now Texas A&M University;

The group, not examined out of the glass faced 61’h, 34”w, 2”d shadow box, includes: the flag, approx. 18.5”h, 27.5”w and semi attached to a 61”l wood pole, the framed certificate. sight is approx. 13.25”h, 15.5”w and overall is approx. 18”h, 21”w
