Japanese lacquered-wood and shibayama two-fold screen, Meiji period (1868-1912), top carved with writhing dragons, above black lacquered panels decorated in high relief with chrysanthemums and peonies, applied seal and three-character hanko, rising on casters, some typical small losses and repairs to applied elements, each panel: approx 72"h, 35"w, 4"d

05.06.25: In my opinion regarding LOT 4371: I have reviewed the applied elements with my supervisor and a colleague, and we believe the material to be bone, I note that the screen is presently intact, each panel standing sturdy and appearing secure at hinges, as described there are typical losses to the applied elements, varying in size but most being small, and exhibit minor restorations including fill and visible glue reinforcement, the black lacquered finish of the paneling is well-preserved and free from observed notable loss, the carved elements comprising the framing are also remarkably well preserved, having only some typical minor rubs and sparse surface wear such as a few small chips, scuffs, and nicks commensurate with age and use
