French Empire period patinated and gilt bronze mantel clock, early 19th c., figural sculpture of the Greek goddess Psyche, after Antonio Canova (Italian, 1757-1822), figure leaned against arched upper case with open hands, with mounts depicting flaming urn and interlocking foliate wreaths, central engine turned dial with white enamel border, Roman numeral hour markers, unmarked time-and-strike movement, silk thread suspension, rising on stepped platform base, further raised on paw feet, accompanied by key and pendulum, bell inscribed "M. Duhamel" at interior, observed operating, in need of adjustment to keep good time, approx 21.5"h, 13.5"w, 5.25"d, 22.25lbs
CR 7.2.25 - As noted in the catalog description, the clock was observed to be operating, but it currently works a bit fast and starts and stops when wound. It likely requires a cleaning or adjustment. A key and pendulum accompany it, and the silk suspension thread is intact. The bell and striker are present and resound nicely when manually struck. The clock winds easily with little resistance, and the movement responds to winding (though it runs fast) when the pendulum is removed. The clock stops after a few seconds when the pendulum is placed, indicating that it is possibly a mismatched weight or that the movement itself needs adjustment to keep good time. In my opinion, the case is in overall good condition with typical light patination, some minor surface wear and light rubs commensurate with age. Psyche is possibly lacking a butterfly that would have originally been held between her hands. The back access door is not present. As with all of our antique clocks, this piece would likely benefit from a professional adjustment and a thorough cleaning.
