1862 CIVIL WAR HANDWRITTEN CONFEDERATE GENERAL ORDER

A handwritten document from the Office of the Adjutant and Inspector General, Confederate States of America, Genl. Samuel B. Cooper (the most senior general officer of the Confederacy), an extract of "Special Orders No. 85", hand written and dated April, 14, 1862, and reading  "Commanders of Regiments, Battalions and Batteries are instructed to have vaccinate at the earliest time such of their men as have not already been vaccinated, By Command of the Secy. of War", signed  by John Withers, Asst Adjt. Genl. (Lt. Col. John Withers, Tennessee, Texas, c. 1827-1893, West Pont class of 1849), further signed by an Asst. Adj. Genl, at Headquarters, Department of Norfolk, in the name of General Benjamin Huger on April 15, 1862, and particularly addressed at lower left to "Headquarters, 1st Brigade", sight approx. 10.25"h, 7.75"w, frame 17"h, 14.5"w, for shipping 2.75lbs   *Note: Less than 30 days later, c. May 10, 1862, Norfolk, Virginia was occupied by Union forces.
